Hand therapy
Hand Therapy in Singapore
The hand stiffens faster than anywhere else in the body. That is why hand therapy starts in days, not weeks.
Hand therapy is occupational therapy for the finger, hand, wrist, forearm and elbow. Our team manages fractures, tendon and ligament injuries, nerve compression, and the stiffness that follows hand surgery, and makes custom thermoplastic splints by hand in the appointment. Five Principal Hand Occupational Therapists across five clinics.

The problem
A hand that healed is not the same as a hand that works
The X-ray is clear. The wound closed. The surgeon is happy. And you still cannot turn a key, hold a pan, or close your fist all the way.
You pass the kettle to your other hand. You button your shirt one-handed and hope nobody notices. You open the jar by wedging it against your hip. None of it hurts much anymore, so it feels like something you should just wait out.
That gap is the whole reason hand therapy exists. Bone knits in about six weeks. The joints, tendons and scar around it take longer, and they recover when something makes them move at the right time, in the right range, under the right load.
Your pain is mostly gone. Has anyone measured your grip?

How recovery is run
4-Stage Structured Recovery
Every plan runs on the Phoenix Recovery Protocol: four stages, with measurable criteria to move between them. You get a stage diagnosis at your first appointment, in writing, so you know where you are rather than guessing.
1. Calm & Protect
Settle pain and swelling. Protect the repair. Keep the joints outside the splint moving.
2. Move & Mobilize
Regain the range the surgeon’s protocol allows, and no more.
3. Rebuild & Strengthen
Grip and pinch measured in kilograms against your other hand.
4. Return & Perform
The tools, the keyboard, the racquet, the jar lid. Tested, not assumed.

Why it is its own discipline
What hand therapists do that a general exercise plan does not
Splints made for your hand
Custom thermoplastic splints molded to the exact finger, wrist or elbow during the appointment. Not a size ordered from a catalog.
Measurement, not impression
Range in degrees at each joint. Grip and pinch in kilograms. Scar mobility and swelling tracked visit to visit.
The surgeon’s protocol
Where an operation has been done, the operating surgeon’s protocol governs what we move and when. We work inside it.
Reports back to your doctor
For surgeon-referred patients, a one-page report at weeks 2, 6 and 12 with the stage, the measures and the next criteria.
If it is not going to plan
Months after surgery and still stiff
The operation went well. Therapy stopped at week six, or never started. Now it is month four, the finger still will not close into the palm, and the follow-up is a reassuring “give it time”.
Some of that time is useful. Some of it is a joint settling into the range it has been allowed to keep. The two feel identical from the inside, which is why the first job is measurement: range in degrees against your other hand, grip in kilograms, and an honest read on what is still changing.
The Stalled Recovery Review is three appointments over three weeks with the same therapist. The first finds what is holding the joint. The next two measure how it responds, because a stiff joint’s response cannot be read in one visit. $690, nett, no GST.
Your first visit
Three steps
1. Tell us what happened
Message us with the injury or the operation and its date. Bring any scans, reports or operation notes you have.
2. Assessment & Treatment
One 45-minute appointment. Finding the real problem is half the battle; treating it is the other half, and most of the 45 minutes is treatment. You leave with a stage diagnosis and a written plan.
3. The program
Your therapist writes the number of appointments each stage needs, and dates your next review into the diary before you leave.
What it costs
One price, stated once
Assessment & Treatment
One standard 45-minute hand therapy appointment, nett, no GST. Every program that follows is priced the same way: the number of appointments your therapist writes down, at $230 each.
- Full history and examination
- Range, grip and pinch measured against your other hand
- Treatment in the same appointment: hands-on work, joint mobilization, tendon gliding, splinting where needed
- A stage diagnosis against the four stages
- A written plan, a home program, and your next review dated into the diary
There are no packages and no discounts for booking a course.
Splint materials are charged separately where a splint is made. Ask when you book and we will tell you the cost beforehand.
Questions we get asked
What is the difference between hand therapy and physiotherapy?
Hand therapy is occupational therapy focused on the finger, hand, wrist, forearm and elbow. It includes custom splint fabrication, scar and edema management, and the tendon and nerve protocols the upper limb needs after surgery. Hand and wrist cases at Phoenix are managed by our hand therapy team.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly. Bring any scans, reports or operation notes you have. Some insurers ask for a doctor’s referral before they reimburse, so check your policy first.
How soon after surgery should I start?
That is set by your surgeon’s protocol, and for many hand operations it is within the first week. Send us the operation date and what was done and we will tell you what the usual timing is for that procedure, and whether you should be seen sooner.
How many appointments will I need?
It depends on the procedure or condition. Your therapist writes the number each stage needs at the assessment and tells you the total then, rather than asking you to commit to a package first.
My surgery was months ago and my hand is still stiff. Is it too late?
Not necessarily, and it is worth measuring rather than assuming. A recovery that stopped improving is not always finished improving. The Stalled Recovery Review exists for exactly this: three appointments over three weeks to measure what is lost and give you an honest read on what is recoverable from here.
Do you make splints on the spot?
Yes. Custom thermoplastic splints are molded to your hand during the appointment where one is needed.
Which clinic should I go to?
The one where the therapist who treats your problem most often works, if the travel is reasonable. Tell us the injury or the operation and we will name the therapist and the clinic.

The injury or the operation, when it was, and what the hand will not do yet. We will tell you which therapist treats it most often, which clinic they are at, and what the first appointment involves.
Last updated 2 October 2026. Case counts on this page are clinician-reported experience, not predictions for any individual recovery. Timings are typical ranges and your surgeon’s protocol takes precedence. Hand therapists assess, splint, exercise, educate and refer; doctors diagnose, inject, prescribe and order imaging. If we find something that needs medical review we refer you back to your doctor.
