What TCM at Phoenix covers
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) at Phoenix is two things: acupuncture, and Chinese herbal medicine prescribed after a consultation. Both are done by one registered TCM physician, and both are used mostly for muscle and joint problems: sciatica, back and neck pain, knee pain, and the tightness that comes with them.
- Acupuncture: very fine, single-use needles at points chosen for you. What it involves, whether it hurts, and how safe it is.
- Chinese herbal medicine: formulas prescribed after a consultation, mostly as granules you dissolve in hot water, delivered to your door.
- Acupuncture for neck pain: how it is used, what the evidence says, and when to see a doctor first.

What happens at your first appointment
Yi Roe asks about the problem, how long you have had it, what makes it worse, your medical history and every medicine and supplement you take. TCM also looks at sleep, digestion, diet and work, so expect questions about those too, and she may look at your tongue and take your pulse.
If acupuncture suits the problem, it usually starts in the same appointment. If herbal medicine suits it, she prescribes a formula and explains how to take it. If she thinks you need a doctor or a physiotherapist first, she will say so.
Wear loose clothing, and avoid a large meal, alcohol and hard exercise in the hour before.
TCM alongside physiotherapy
Many of our TCM patients also see a physiotherapist or hand therapist here. Acupuncture can take the edge off pain; it does not rebuild strength or movement. A joint or back that has stopped improving still needs to be tested and loaded, and that is what an Assessment & Treatment with a physiotherapist does: one 45-minute appointment, $230, nett, no GST.
When to see a doctor first
TCM does not replace medical care. See a doctor before acupuncture or herbal medicine for new pain after a fall or an accident, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, unexplained weight loss, fever with back or neck pain, or any new symptom you have not had checked. For sudden weakness or numbness down one side of the body, chest pain, or loss of bladder or bowel control, call 995.
Tell Yi Roe if you are pregnant, take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.
Questions
Before you book
Is your TCM physician registered?
Yes. Tan Yi Roe is registered with the Singapore TCM Practitioners Board, registration number T1102830D. You can check any TCM practitioner’s registration on the Board’s public register.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly on WhatsApp or online.
Is acupuncture the same as dry needling?
No. Both use fine needles. Acupuncture is based on TCM’s map of points and meridians and is done by our TCM physician. Dry needling targets muscle based on a physiotherapy assessment and is done by our physiotherapists and hand therapists.
How many appointments will I need?
It depends on the problem and how long you have had it. After the first appointment, Yi Roe will tell you what she suggests and when to check whether it is helping. If it is not, we stop.
Can I get herbal medicine delivered?
Yes, on prescription. Herbal medicine is $12 a day, usually prescribed by the week: $84 for 7 days, $168 for 14 days. Once you have paid, it is usually delivered within one to two working days.
