ESWT is commonly used for plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, rotator cuff pain, tennis or golfer’s elbow, and stress fractures. We use this treatment to help patients dealing with sports injuries or daily movement discomfort, used in managing certain conditions involving tendons and soft tissues.

Physiotherapy Tailored to Your Needs

At Phoenix Rehab, we use extracorporeal shockwave therapy as part of a structured physiotherapy approach to support recovery from certain musculoskeletal conditions. Each treatment session typically lasts around 15–20 minutes, and several sessions are usually spaced 1–2 weeks apart, depending on your condition and progress. This therapy is applied to support physiotherapy goals such as mobility and function, combined with guided exercises and proper rehabilitation techniques. Shockwave Therapy may help with the following three common conditions.

Plantar Fasciitis

Persistent heel pain under the foot often comes from inflammation of the plantar fascia. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy sends pressure waves into the heel area, which may support local circulation and natural recovery. Following consistent sessions, results of the treatment may lead to reduced morning pain and improved comfort when walking.

Achilles Tendinitis

The tendon at the back of the ankle can become painful and thickened after overuse. ESWT targets the injured tendon, which may help to stimulate healing and lessen discomfort. Over several sessions, which are intended to help relieve discomfort in the Achilles tendon area, inflammation may decrease, and strength may return.

Shoulder or Rotator Cuff Pain

Rotator cuff injuries can limit lifting, reaching, or rotation in daily tasks. Shock wave therapy focuses sound waves on the injured tendons, supporting the body’s repair mechanism to improve movement comfort. With consistent sessions, you may notice improvements in terms of shoulder flexibility. It may be used in physiotherapy plans for shoulder or rotator cuff-related discomfort.

Manual Physiotherapy & Soft Tissue Release

Hands-on treatment, including massage, stretching, and targeted manipulation, aims to improve flexibility and comfort by helping to loosen tight muscles and tendons. While shock wave therapy uses sound waves and controlled micro-injuries to support natural recovery, manual therapy works directly with tissue mobility and joint function. Often combined with shock wave therapy (ESWT) for better results, depending on the treatment plan.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection

PRP involves drawing your blood, concentrating platelets (rich in growth factors), and then injecting them into injured tissue. This encourages healing from the inside. While ESWT is non-invasive, PRP is minimally invasive. Both are designed to support tissue regeneration but differ in method and recovery time.

Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasound therapy uses high-frequency sound waves (different from shock waves) to warm tissue, improve blood circulation, and reduce stiffness. It’s less intense than ESWT but can be gentler, especially if your condition is acute or if you prefer milder intervention.

Laser Therapy (Low-Level)

Low-level laser therapy delivers pulses of light energy to affected areas. It also aims to reduce inflammation and support cellular healing, though it works at a lower energy and a more superficial depth compared to shockwave therapy. This may be suitable for milder cases or to complement ESWT, as assessed by the physiotherapist.
