Numb fingers that wake you at night. Tingling that arrives mid climb, mid rally, or mid typing. Wrist pain that flares every time you load it.
That is my caseload. Nerve compression at the wrist and elbow, carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel, makes up a large share of my week, alongside TFCC injuries and the wrist and finger problems that come with climbing, tennis and gym training.
Why climbers find me.
I used to rockclimb myself. A few years ago I treated one climber’s TFCC injury, and she introduced me to her whole climbing group, then their friends who play tennis and train in the gym. They kept coming because I understand two things about athletes: the strain a sport puts through a hand, and the pull of getting back to it. I do not treat a wrist in isolation. I treat a wrist that needs to hold a crimp, a racquet or a barbell again.
How I work.
I started my career in an acute hospital, where finger, hand and elbow injuries became my focus. I make custom thermoplastic splints, and I build every exercise plan around the patient’s actual activity demands, because there is no one size fits all in hands. I would rather spend part of an appointment explaining what is happening inside your hand than have you follow a plan you do not understand.
Training.
BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy from Glasgow Caledonian University, Diploma in Occupational Therapy from Nanyang Polytechnic. AHPC registered since 2017.
What I treat
- Carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel (numbness and tingling in the fingers)
- TFCC and wrist ligament injuries
- Sports wrist and finger injuries, especially climbing, racquet sports and gym training
- Tennis elbow
- Custom thermoplastic splinting
How the work is structured
Every plan I write runs on the Phoenix Recovery Protocol: four stages, each with criteria to meet before you leave it. Most of what I see arrives after an operation, and hand therapy after surgery sets out how those weeks are run. Hand therapy covers the conditions we treat without surgery.
