Finger fractures. Wrist fractures. And the wrist pain that arrives with motherhood, the one so common it has its own name, Mummy’s Thumb.
That is my caseload. I have treated wrist and finger fracture cases across more than a decade of clinical practice, from industrial injuries to sports injuries, and over 500 mothers with De Quervain, the tendon condition behind Mummy’s Thumb. If your pain started when the night feeds and carrying started, you are not imagining it, and you are far from alone.
The cases that stay with me.
- A professional baseball player came to me for a second opinion on a TFCC and wrist ligament injury. He did not want surgery, so we worked through the stages without it, with his grip measured in kilograms at every review. He gave me a signed baseball at the end. It is still one of my proudest possessions.
- A teenager from Timor Leste came to Singapore after a farm accident in childhood and multiple surgeries back home. Working alongside the hand surgeon who reconstructed his hand, we worked on movement patterns he had never had the chance to learn. That kind of case is months of work, and it is the most interesting work there is.
How hands became my thing.
Becoming a mother changed how I practise. I felt for myself what a wrist injury takes from you when a baby needs lifting, feeding and carrying regardless. So when a mother comes to me, the plan accounts for the fact that she cannot put the baby down, which is usually the part that decides whether a plan works.
Sport keeps my other eye sharp. I play pickleball myself, and I have treated over 100 professional and competitive athletes for wrist and finger injuries, from baseball to sepak takraw, badminton, tennis and pole dance. Athletes need their hands back at full power, and that standard carries into how I treat everyone.
Training and teaching.
I graduated with a Bachelor’s (Honours) in Occupational Therapy from the Singapore Institute of Technology with Trinity College Dublin, including clinical placements in Ireland. I began my career in acute care rehabilitation, which is where hands became my focus, and I have since taught upper limb conditions and management to medical students at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. AHPC registered.
What I treat
- Finger fractures and finger ligament injuries
- Wrist fractures, including distal radius fractures
- De Quervain (Mummy’s Thumb)
- Wrist ligament injuries
How the work is structured
Every plan I write runs on the Phoenix Recovery Protocol: four stages, each with criteria to meet before you leave it. Most of what I see arrives after an operation, and hand therapy after surgery sets out how those weeks are run. Hand therapy covers the conditions we treat without surgery.
