If you have broken your wrist, or your wrist still hurts months after what you were told was a sprain, this is what I treat every week.
Wrist fractures come first in my caseload. Around 250 of them since 2018, plus about 200 wrist ligament injuries, including TFCC tears, which are easily mistaken for sprains. I also treat finger fractures, finger ligament injuries, and the stiffness that follows hand and wrist surgery.
The cases that stay with me.
- A man came to me after a lighter exploded in his dominant hand. Multiple finger fractures, part of one fingertip lost. On his first visit he could not move his fingers at all. Work like that is months of splinting, graded movement, and grip measured in kilograms against the other hand at every review. It is slow, and it is the reason I do this.
- A young woman came in with TFCC and ligament tears in both wrists. She was in pain, and she was frightened of what it meant for her training. We worked through it without surgery, stage by stage, with her range and grip measured each time.
How hands became my thing.
I found hand therapy during my hospital rotation and there was no turning back. Part of it is the problem solving. No two hand injuries are the same, and I shape custom thermoplastic splints to the exact finger, wrist or elbow in front of me. It is close to a craft. The bigger part is that the distance between a hand someone cannot use and a hand they are willing to use again is work you can actually do, week by week.
Training and recognition.
Before Phoenix, I worked at Sengkang General Hospital across orthopaedic, surgical and rehabilitation settings. I hold a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy from Glasgow Caledonian University, where I received the McAllister Prize for undergraduate research. I was awarded the Singapore Health Quality Service Award (Silver) two years running, and I am AHPC registered.
Outside the clinic I play pickleball and golf, make coffee, and take photographs. Staying active myself keeps me honest about what patients are working to get back to.
What I treat
- Wrist fractures, including distal radius fractures
- TFCC and wrist ligament injuries
- Finger fractures and finger ligament injuries
- Stiffness after hand or wrist surgery
- Custom thermoplastic splinting
How the work is structured
Every plan I write runs on the Phoenix Recovery Protocol: four stages, each with criteria to meet before you leave it. Most of what I see arrives after an operation, and hand therapy after surgery sets out how those weeks are run. Hand therapy covers the conditions we treat without surgery.
