If sciatica or knee pain has been wearing you down, this is the work I have done since 2011. Around 300 cases of nerve and knee pain, treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine.
Most of my patients do not start with TCM. They come to it later, often a little sceptical. I understand that better than most, because I trained as a scientist before I trained in Chinese medicine. I took a First Class Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences at NTU, then a Bachelor of Medicine in Chinese Medicine at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Scepticism does not bother me. It is a reasonable starting position, and I would rather you hold it than pretend otherwise.
How this became my work.
I am an active person and I play all kinds of sports, so pain that stops movement has always had my attention. I began my career at a non-profit TCM organization, where most of my patients were elderly people living with lower back pain, sciatica and knee pain. Years of that work taught me how these conditions behave over time.
Sometimes the pain is not coming from where it hurts. Assessment in Chinese medicine looks at the whole person rather than the sore spot alone, which is often what changes the plan.

Where this sits
This work runs alongside the clinical rehabilitation rather than in place of it. TCM covers what I do, and the physiotherapists and hand therapists I work beside are here. Their plans run on the Phoenix Recovery Protocol.
Tan Yi Roe is registered with the Singapore TCM Practitioners Board as a TCM Physician (T1102830D). Last reviewed 6 October 2026. TCM at Phoenix Rehab runs alongside physiotherapy and hand therapy and is not a substitute for medical assessment.
